How it all got started...

A lot of people have been asking me recently how I got started with Ghost Gallery. What exactly do I do, and why? How? So, I figured I'd write down the story! Sometimes when you're so involved with what you're doing, you forget to step back and remember what motivated you in the first place...so I thank those of you who have inspired me to look more deeply into this-

Before I moved to Seattle, I had been in touch with a gallery in Pioneer Square (which shall remain unnamed) regarding an internship. I was so excited, because I had been hearing over and over how difficult it was to get a job, how "elitist" the gallery circuit could be, etc. So I thought it was pretty lucky that I could move to Seattle and not worry about it, and have something already lined up to get me in the door.
Well.
I moved here in June of 2005, right after finishing my degree in Richmond, Va. I emailed and called the gallery several times as soon as I arrived, and received no response whatsoever. For 2 weeks! I was confused, and a little worried- So I started job hunting, and thinking of a back-up plan.
Then during the 3rd week, I decided to go to the gallery during the Pioneer Square 1st Thursday artwalk, and see for myself what was going on- Maybe they just weren't getting my messages, or were just insanely busy (?)- I went down there and walked into a crowded event at the gallery. I was impressed by the size and how nice it was. I immediately picked out the owner amidst the crowd (tall with bow-tie said it all). I went up to him and introduced myself: "Hi, I'm Laurie Kearney, I've been in touch with you over the past several months regarding working here...I just moved here from Richmond, yada yada." He was perfectly nice and "excited" to meet me, he hadn't known I was here yet, and would be in touch with me.
Ok! Getting somewhere!
?
Another couple of weeks goes by and I'm finally told via email that I need to apply for the position there, that there is no internship open, and please send in my resume. At which point, (I mean I had already moved on in a way), I said forget it. How discouraging. How disappointing.
So, I felt bad for a little while, got a scary job at Nordstrom doing skincare for a while (thank you back-up trade!), quit and did temp work, and pondered my next move...

It wasn't until the following December that I hosted my first art opening as an independent curator at the Pretty Parlor on Capitol Hill (for Robin Marsh, amazing painter and now close friend). It took months of planning; How would I pull off being able to throw art events in a town I was so new to? But I am one lucky woman, because I had met incredible people that were (and are)  with me every step of the way towards "just going for it." The opening was a success, thanks to Anna Banana, Jacob, Robin and everyone who supported me and the idea, and WAH-LA! An independent curator was born!

What was my motivation? I had felt really discouraged and frustrated at how I was treated by that gallery... and I thought, how many people does this happen to? TONS. ALL THE TIME. It's not really in my nature to step aside and give up so easily, so I did something about it. After having applied to other galleries in town with no luck, I decided to just do it myself, go into business. So while I'm here, I have made it my goal to curate quality, encouraging and unique art events for as long as I can, without the intimidating process that often goes hand-in-hand with typical gallery shows.

I would love to have my own gallery space of course, but financially it is far out of reach at this time- So by working independently, I can show work in a variety of venues that need art for their walls, and either don't have the time or resources to make that happen.
I absolutely love what I do, and it's has been 2 amazing years of almost monthly events here in Seattle. I've met incredible artists and made many friends. And that is my story so far.

~ Red Thread gallery debut ~

I am extremely lucky to be living in a large 2-bedroom apartment on the hill all by myself (temporarily)~
What to do with all this space? I decided to create a "home base" for Ghost Gallery, called Red Thread (which is my operating business name)...
The main idea behind this is to have art exhibit "previews" in my home, before the exhibit moves on to another venue. Why? Mainly, I have witnessed many people admire artwork that is hanging in a gallery, but then say: "I just can't picture it on my own walls...I'm not sure how it would work in my house, etc..."

I want to provide art buyers & appreciators with an actual example of how you can bring original artwork inside your home, and have it work with your existing environment. Doesn't that sound nice? Especially this time of year...hint hint. Art gifts!

Events at Red Thread will not be open to the public (yet), but will be invite-based, to give the artists' contacts (and our own) another new "gallery" experience. This will also prepare the road towards an off-location Red Thread in the future!

I will post pictures after the first opening, which is this Saturday, Nov.22nd...
April Brimers' "Portraits of Curiosity" was recently at McLeod Residence, and is moving to Last Waltz Boutique in January~ Until then, it will be available at Red Thread!

~ upcoming events and the force behind them~

This Friday marks the 4Th opening I will have hosted at Stylus in Belltown. Working with the Stylus team has been very inspiring, and has offered me the chance to work with a huge space ~ Something I haven't done since I worked at the Anderson Gallery in college! It takes at least 40-50 works of art to fill the 2-floor venue, meaning each show involves multiple artists. The challenge of curating a cohesive, pleasing exhibit is ongoing and very fulfilling when accomplished. I have much to learn of course, but this is a dream come true for any curator!

The show will feature Devon Kelley-Yurdin from Brooklyn, NY, who came my way via another Brooklyn artist, Jen May. (Jen showed her work in a textile exhibit that I hosted with Cybele Phillips at Last Waltz Boutique earlier this year...Thank you Jen for the networking!:)

Having an artist from NY is exciting because it means that Ghost Gallery is starting to reach out across the country, pulling in new viewers for artists, and providing fresh work for the public to admire. There will be artists from all OVER participating in the Miniature Art Extravaganza, and I can't believe the response so far...Vegas, Colorado, Texas, Chicago, Montreal, Atlanta, New York...

On a more personal note, this past year has been an extremely tragic one, with certain recent events forcing me to pull back and sacrifice some of the energy I normally would be using for Ghost. However despite this, I have been able to continue working, even feeling a huge therapeutic release in doing so. I deeply miss my Grandmother who has passed, and I owe my stamina and determination to her...
The Miniature Art party is my 2-year anniversary in business, and I want to use it as a HUGE "THANK YOU" to everyone who is participating, everyone who has been there for me personally during hard times & grief, and also as a celebration of continuity and revival for the new year...
There's so much to come!

Imagine This!

Ah! I'm so lucky to recently be involved with an amazing group of women (artists, entrepreneurs, mothers, sisters, friends) that truly wish to support one another, with NO hidden agendas! No cutting of throats, no shameless self-promoting without regard to the needs of others...

This is excellent. It heals recent disappointments, and gets the wheels turning, enabling us to think that it IS possible to balance/attain the ambition with the seemingly out-of-reach.

As a novice curator, of course I drool over large open spaces that are begging to be full of humans enjoying art, music & design. I've been learning how to utilize spaces that are not my own (Having the luck and privilege of being invited to exhibit shows in other venues)- It's an interesing experience, one that often goes by quickly - going in, assessing the space, and hanging art in the hopes that frequent visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the addition. So far, so good. But I have yet to work with really large spaces...like these...

Maybe soon? And yes, the first image is from Italy. Tori opened my eyes to this idea!
