Imagine This!

Ah! I'm so lucky to recently be involved with an amazing group of women (artists, entrepreneurs, mothers, sisters, friends) that truly wish to support one another, with NO hidden agendas! No cutting of throats, no shameless self-promoting without regard to the needs of others...

This is excellent. It heals recent disappointments, and gets the wheels turning, enabling us to think that it IS possible to balance/attain the ambition with the seemingly out-of-reach.

As a novice curator, of course I drool over large open spaces that are begging to be full of humans enjoying art, music & design. I've been learning how to utilize spaces that are not my own (Having the luck and privilege of being invited to exhibit shows in other venues)- It's an interesing experience, one that often goes by quickly - going in, assessing the space, and hanging art in the hopes that frequent visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the addition. So far, so good. But I have yet to work with really large spaces...like these...

Maybe soon? And yes, the first image is from Italy. Tori opened my eyes to this idea!

Interesting Presentation!

I wish I could go to this! It would be interesting to see how I could tie this in to the local art scene here...and to learn how other countries are "pushing the envelope" with regards to innovative curatorial practices!

MAKING IT HAPPEN: Dora Hegyi
Towards an art scene in "sheer togetherness"
When: Monday May 12, 1:00–3:00 pm
Where: Center for Curatorial Studies, Seminar Room I How can you as a curator share knowledge if the backgrounds and used vocabularies of artists and other cultural producers are different? How can you introduce practices that are not familiar? For Dora Hegyi, a curator based in Budapest, curating does not only mean exhibition making, but also mediating and catalyzing within the art field. She will speak about her activities in Hungary, a country new to democracy, art institutions such as public museums, and galleries, which often represent old, non-flexible structures and thinking. This means that on the one hand, you are free to do whatever you wish, since critical approach is not established as the common language for understanding art. You can experiment with or discover different, less acknowledged formats as you could not have before. On the other hand, the existing structures are not flexible at all, but frozen without any openness and understanding for new ways of thinking. In 2006, she started The Free School for Art Theory and Practice, whose program includes film screenings, radio programs, discussions, lectures, grants, awards, etc. The main objective is to shape the professional consciousness of the local art scene and to create an approach to contemporary visual art, as a segment of culture that creates knowledge and information access and with this contributes to social responsibility.MAKING IT HAPPEN is a series of public lectures addressing new terrains being explored in contemporary curating. Lectures take place every week at the Center for Curatorial Studies. Reservation recommended. Please call 845.758.7598 oe e-mail ccs@bard.edu. --

Capitol Hill Artwalks for Spring & Summer!

Every 2nd Tuesday of the month, Capitol Hill has an Artwalk - Apparently it hasn't been very lively or well-advertised in the past, but a wonderful group of organizers are now changing that!

Anna Lange, owner of the Pretty Parlor, and I will be taking part in this monthly event by hosting art and clothing events at her colorful & cozy boutique on the hill...

The first one we're doing is already NEXT WEEK! Joe-Vollan, an incredible local artist who specializes in graphic, vivid paintings of mechanical creatures (often in surreal, post-apocalyptic landscapes), shows a more organic side with images of birds & foliage, both realistic and modified. If you've been to King Cobra, then you've surely seen his large-scale mural that goes along the entire downstairs bar-side of the club. AMAZING!

There will also be a Trunk Show with clothing by Kombat Glamour, and RiZE drinks will be served!
Pretty Parlor is located at 119 Summit Ave E- on the corner of Summit & Loretta
Thursday, May 13th 6-9PM

Textile show @ Last Waltz Boutique!

I am very, very excited about this Friday's art opening at Last Waltz Boutique!
I've teamed up with Cybele Philips for this show- Cybele is the owner of this wonderful and classy boutique located in the central district of Seattle...I've known her for a number of years, and am lucky that we've both ended up in this city, able to support each other in our wild creative ventures!

This Friday's show will feature fiber, installation and textile work by local and national artists.
I reached out a little further this time around, and was thrilled to receive work from Vancouver, New York and California!
The artists: Alan Hurley, Betsy Schairer, Jamey Braden, Jennifer Six, Mindy Huffman (all from Seattle), Janet Wang (Vancouver, BC), Jen May & Langdon Graves (NYC) & Noel Ill (Cali)!!! It's a great mix of beauty, humour and intrique...
Muse: I've been focusing more on multi-media exhibits recently, and asking myself the ever-important questions such as... Why do I do this? What is my ultimate goal? Where do I want to take Ghost Gallery next? And what message am I trying to convey with the shows I organize and the work I include? These are questions that must constantly be acknowledged in this business, and I will be most likely be playing with the answers here over time-
The sun is out, and it's time to dive in!
